Did Jesus Go to Hell Between His Death and Resurrection?
1) Direct answer
Yes. After His death, Jesus descended to the lower parts of the earth. He did not go there to suffer, but to preach to the spirits in prison, to triumph over death and hell, and to lead the righteous captive ones out. On the third day He rose, and He was not left there.
2) Scriptural explanation
- “Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption” (Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:27,31). His body lay in the tomb, but His soul went to the place of the departed; and He was not left there.
- “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:40). He descended to the heart of the earth.
- “By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient… in the days of Noah” (1 Peter 3:19–20). He preached—announced His victory—no second chance, but a proclamation.
- “For this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead” (1 Peter 4:6). A declaration to those in the realm of the dead.
- “When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive… Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?” (Ephesians 4:8–10). He first descended, then ascended, bringing the captive righteous with Him.
- “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). That day He went to Paradise—the righteous compartment of the unseen realm.
- “I am he that liveth, and was dead… and have the keys of hell and of death” (Revelation 1:18). He took the keys—complete victory.
3) Simple clarifying logic
- His body was in the grave; His soul went to the unseen world of the dead.
- He visited Paradise to comfort and lead out the righteous, and He preached to the disobedient spirits in prison as a testimony of His triumph.
- He did not burn in torment; He conquered. The Scripture says He was not left in hell and that He arose.
- If He did not descend, how could He keep His word to the thief, and how could Scripture say He “descended first into the lower parts of the earth”?
