Who Is the Holy Spirit?
1) Direct Answer
The Holy Spirit is God Himself—the very Life of Jesus Christ—coming to dwell in and empower His people. He is not a third person; He is the one God in His indwelling office.
2) Scriptural Explanation
- The Bible says, “God is a Spirit” (John 4:24). That’s who the Holy Spirit is—God.
- “Now the Lord is that Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:17). The Lord Jesus, after His resurrection, comes back as Spirit to be in His Church.
- Jesus promised “another Comforter,” then said, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you” (John 14:16-18). And, “the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost… shall teach you all things” (John 14:26). So the Comforter is His own presence by the Spirit.
- The Scripture uses “Spirit of God” and “Spirit of Christ” for the same indwelling Life: “If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his… the Spirit of God dwell in you” (Romans 8:9-11).
- “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27) is the Holy Spirit in the believer.
- There is “one Spirit” (Ephesians 4:4), not a separate divine person from the Father and the Son.

Now notice, it’s not three Gods and not three persons. The one God was above us as Father, came among us in flesh as the Son, and returned to live in us as the Holy Spirit. The body that walked in Galilee was the Son; the Life inside was God. After finishing redemption, that same Life came back on the Day of Pentecost to indwell believers. He seals (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30), empowers (Acts 1:8), leads into all truth (John 16:13), quickens our mortal bodies (Romans 8:11), and gives the new birth (John 3:5-8). “Holy Ghost” and “Holy Spirit” are the same—the personal presence of God in His people.
