Is Speaking in Tongues the Initial Evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Ghost?

- The Bible says not all believers speak with tongues: “Do all speak with tongues?” (1 Corinthians 12:30). The answer is no. The same chapter shows the Spirit gives different gifts to different members (1 Corinthians 12:4–11).
- Jesus listed tongues as one of several signs that may follow believers (Mark 16:17), not the required doorway for all.
- Acts shows variety: some spoke with tongues (Acts 2; Acts 10; Acts 19), but others received without any record of tongues (Acts 8:14–17). Paul himself said he spoke with tongues (1 Corinthians 14:18), yet his conversion account does not make tongues the evidence (Acts 9).
- Jesus said the mark is love: “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35).
- The Lord said we know them by their fruits (Matthew 7:16–20). The fruit of the Spirit is the proof of His indwelling (Galatians 5:22–23).
- The Spirit bears witness that we are God’s children (Romans 8:14–16). If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His (Romans 8:9). The evidence is His life and witness in you.
- The Spirit leads into all truth (John 16:13). He that is of God hears God’s Words (John 8:47; 1 John 4:6).
- Gifts without love and obedience prove nothing: “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels… and have not charity, I am nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:1). Many will boast of gifts, yet He will say, “I never knew you” (Matthew 7:22–23).
- The Corinthians “came behind in no gift” (1 Corinthians 1:7), yet Paul called them carnal (1 Corinthians 3:1–3). So gifts are not the evidence of the new birth.

- If tongues were the initial evidence for every believer, the Bible would not plainly say, “Do all speak with tongues?” with the implied answer, No.
- Gifts can be imitated or operated without a sanctified life, but the Holy Ghost is Holy; He produces a holy life, love, and obedience to the Word.
- The baptism of the Holy Ghost is the new birth—Christ in you—and that will always line you up with Scripture and display His nature.

Now notice: tongues are a good and scriptural gift, and we thank God for every true manifestation. But the evidence of the Holy Ghost is the Word received, the Spirit’s witness within, and the life of Jesus Christ lived out—love, fruit, and obedience.
